Wen-Jiu (Matthew) Cheng went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 13, 2023, in San Jose, California, after a brief illness.
Wen was born in Canton, China, in 1930. He grew up in Canton, Macau, and Hong Kong. He went to Taiwan as an overseas student studying chemical engineering at Tainan Engineering College. Wen came to the United States in 1958 to continue his studies at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and New York State University at Syracuse, earning his PhD degree. He moved to Midland, Michigan in 1968, and worked for the Dow Chemical Company until his retirement in 1995.
In 1972 Wen married Roberta Chow, and together they raised their sons, Robert and Stephen, in Midland, Michigan. After retirement, Wen and Roberta traveled frequently, exploring the United States and visiting all seven continents.
Wen and Roberta were members of the Midland Reformed Church and the Midland Chinese Bible Study Fellowship for several decades, and were blessed with many dear friends while in Midland. Wen and Roberta moved to San Jose, California, in the fall of 2022 to be closer to family after more than five decades in Midland.
Wen is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roberta; sons Robert and Stephen; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Elijah, and Kyle; sister Sarah; and many nephews and nieces.
A viewing and memorial service will be held on January 28, 2023, at Darling & Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel.
