Vicenta Gonzales Satuito Tena, EdD, formerly from Sunnyvale, California and recently from Campbell, California, passed away at age 87 on December 14, 2022. She was a devout Roman Catholic, a loving wife and mother, a gifted learner, a leader and an educator. She received from Stanford University an M.A in 1981 and her Ed.D in 1989.
Vi, as her close friends knew her, was born on August 28, 1935, in Polangui, Albay, Philippines, to Juanita Salem Gonzales and Catalino Aguilar Satuito. On March 24, 1963, she married Ernesto Beda Rastrullo Tena, Esquire of Oas, Albay, and were blessed with children, Joseph Raymond, Joy Agnes, and Don Ernesto.
Vi graduated from Ateneo de Naga University with high honors, becoming the1955 A.A. Salutatorian, 1956 B.S. Valedictorian, and the 1957 B.S.E. Valedictorian. While studying for her Masters at the University of the Philippines, she pursued a teaching career and inspired English and Journalism students at top private schools like St. Agnes Academy, Maryknoll College, and St. Scholastica Academy. Her love to teach the English language found her as the Head of the English Department at Manuel Roxas High School in Quezon City, as President of the Quezon City School Paper Advisers Association. During her tenure overseeing the English Department, she inspired and groomed many teachers and student editors-in-chief who went on to win many nationwide accolades for the school paper.
Vi was a Lifetime Member of Ateneo de Naga Alumni Association of Northern California and Stanford Alumni Association; 1995-1996 President of Ateneo de Naga Alumni Association of Northern California, and Board Member and Chair of the Scholarship Committee of the FilipinoAmerican Association of Lakewood Village in Sunnyvale, California; member of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Northern California, the Filipino-American Community at Stanford, Philippine Association of University Women in California, Cursillos In Christianity San Jose Chapter, Fil-Am Association of Our Lady of Peace, Devotees of Our Lady Virgin of Penafrancia, Bicol National Association of America, Bay Area Bicol Association, Oasnon, USA, and San Jose Maharlika Host Lions Club District 4-C6.
Vi and Ernie established and privately funded the Tena-Satuito Scholarship for the underprivileged gifted and talented students in Ateneo de Naga University in Naga City, Bicol, Philippines in 1993. During their retirement, they enjoyed being active in their organizations and travelling with their friends.
Vi will be missed by her children Joseph (Jing) Tena (Linda Alcantara), Agnes (Sheldon) Wong, and Don (JJ) Tena; grandchildren JamieLeigh, Chris-Michael, Stephanie, Haley, Julia, Heart and Katelyn; great-grandson Mars; brother Melchor Satuito, Sr., sister-in-laws Amelia Naz Satuito, Salvacion Segarra Satuito, Ligaya Vera Satuito; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ernesto Beda Rastrullo Tena, Esquire, parents Juanita Salem Gonzales and Catalino Aguilar Satuito; sister Eleanor Satuito; brothers Mariano Satuito, Fiorello Satuito, and Ferdinand Satuito; and sister-in-law Rizalina Relleve Satuito.
A Funeral Vigil will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Vigil Service, Rosary, and Novena beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Darling & Fischer Memorial Chapel, 231 East Campbell Avenue, Campbell, California. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lucy Parish, 2350 South Winchester Boulevard, Campbell, California. Burial immediately after will be at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Drive, Los Altos, California.
