Suellen Smith Mader of Sonoma County, California, passed away peacefully and surrounded by friends and family on September 18th, at the age of 77, after a long battle with cancer.
Born on October 29th, 1943, Suellen aka “Susie” grew up the daughter of Dutch and English families in the Schenectady, NY area and at her grandparent's ancestral home in Vischer's Ferry, NY. She graduated from Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, NY and attended Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City and attended American University of Washington, D.C. She also spent many years in West Philadelphia before moving to California, and always held a deep fondness for the city.
Susie was known for her warmth, compassion, humor, and style. She was a certified master gardener, and leaves behind a legacy of many beautiful gardens. She was also a great lover of music of all kinds, and especially loved listening and dancing to The Rolling Stones and other classic rock artists. She loved books, poetry, art, and above all: people. Friendship was the greatest of her superpowers. Susie also studied Celtic shamanism and lived a life full of curiosity, wonder, and spunk.
Some of Susie’s memorable moments included playing in her childhood treehouse with her big brother Spike, living a bohemian life in West Philly, spending time with her children and grandchildren, travelling to Australia and Bali, attending house concerts and dinner parties with her beloved artist pals, proofing manuscripts for her best friend--author Jeanne DuPrau--and creating glorious gardens for her landscape design business, Mader Green.
Suellen is survived by her son Charles Mader of San Francisco, CA, daughter Evelyn Clancy of Sonoma CA, son Josh Mader of Santa Cruz, CA and her many grandchildren. She was predeceased by her older brother Sheldon 'Spike' V. Smith.
