Patricia Ann Quinn Hawkins, age 87, passed away on Feb. 25, 2022 in San Jose, CA. after a 22 year fight with cancer.
Patty Quinn was born at home in Winner, South Dakota. She lived in Winner until she went away to college. She and her mom and dad lived in several houses growing up and when the family returned to Winner each summer, she enjoyed driving by all those houses and telling stories of when she lived there, who she played with and all the adventures she had. Her final home in Winner was the built along side her father’s Hatchery. She knew everyone in that small town and she could tell you where those folks are to this day because she kept in touch with them all through phone calls, emails and most recently text messages, but mostly letters. It seemed like she was single handedly keeping the post office in business with all the postage stamps she purchased.
She went to the catholic school all through grade school, except 5th grade. (If anyone knows that story, we’d love to hear it.) She attended Winner High and after graduation she moved from Winner to attend the University of South Dakota at Vermilion to pursue teaching. One summer she spent teaching in a one-room classroom.
While at home in Winner in 1954, by chance, Patty met Jean Hawkins. He was newly discharged from the Navy and had traveled with a buddy to visit his buddy’s brother Doug. Doug and Mary Jones are Patty’s Aunt and Uncle. They were looking for something to do on a Friday night and they all ended up at a dance. After the dance a group of friends hung out at a barber shop and they’ve been together ever since.
Pat and Jean married in 1955 and started their family in Jean’s hometown of San Jose where they have lived for nearly 68 years. Pat was a stay at home mom and an avid volunteer while her children were in school and later as her grandchildren were growing up. She enjoyed attending sporting events of kids and grandkids. She was especially joyful with the babies and wishes everyone would have more. Pat enjoyed many activities, being involved with YLI, St. Basils, Irish Club, Model A Club, Santa Clara Iris Society, Girl Scout leader, Babysitting Coop, Bridge club and the Teal run for ovarian cancer
She also enjoyed writing letters and mailing them through the post office. She kept in touch with so many people and will be truly missed by all of them.
She is preceded in death by her parents Bernard (Bumps) and Eleanore (Tiny) Quinn and her grandson, Spencer Rainbolt. She is survived by her husband Jean Hawkins, her children Steve Hawkins (Meredith), Debra Busch (Mark), Rebecca Rainbolt (Stephen), Mary Hawkins, Malissa Cestari (Thomas) and Amy Hawkins.
