May Tang (Cheung) died peacefully on April 26th at home in San Jose under the care of With Grace Hospice. She was 86. Previously, she was a resident of Palmvilla Memory Care in Campbell.
May is survived by her 4 siblings, Sister Su-Ngan Leung (d. David) in Hong Kong, Sister Queenie Lin (Frank) of Daly City, Sister Josephine Fung (Guillermo) of San Francisco, brother Columbus (Katty) in Australia. Her 3 children: Daughters Helena Gates (Doug), Judy Sampas (Nick), Son Bill and 5 Grandchildren: Vael, Leslie and Nicole Gates; Annacy and Michaela Sampas.
May held a degree in Chemistry and attended Foothill College and SJSU for continued education. She worked as a Mask Designer for a variety of semiconductor firms in Silicon Valley until she retired at age 69. Prior to May’s immigration to the United States in the early 70’s from Hong Kong, she was an educator and an entrepreneur. She was born and raised in Hong Kong Island but as her father died young, May and her siblings were raised by their mother, Lau Mo-Kit, a homemaker.
Self-reliance and independence of spirit essentially defined May’s eventful life. Well known for her well attended dinner parties and holiday celebrations, she was also an avid reader, a talented seamstress- often creating her own patterns for traditional and other formal apparel, and enjoyed gardening as well as traveling internationally with her late husband, Paul. She met her husband Paul as a teenager at the Hua-Ying secondary school in Foshan China.
A memorial service will be held at a future time when we can all gather safely together to celebrate May’s life. May will be united with her husband in burial at the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos, CA.
