Lucy Monica Talavera Maria de la Luz Alba

May 4, 1929 ~ August 19, 2022 (age 93)

Our beautiful mother Lucy enjoyed a very long and fruitful life before succumbing at the age of 93. She was born in Jerome, Arizona on May 4, 1929 to Yldefonso Alba and Ygnacia Luna, Mexican immigrants from the state of Jalisco.  Lucy was the seventh of eight siblings. She had four sisters- Guadalupe, Jesus (Jessie), Manuela (Nellie) and Rosa (Rosie) and three brothers - Alfonso, Severiano and Juan (Johnny).  Her family followed the crops, working in the fields of California, before settling in San José.

Lucy attended Woodrow Wilson Jr. High where she met her loving husband, Roy Talavera. They married and moved to the city of Santa Clara in 1957. In her early years, she worked at the Del Monte Cannery before becoming a homemaker and raising five children. After the children were grown, she worked at Atari and Verbatim as a quality control inspector.

Lucy enjoyed sewing, embroidering, and crocheting. She loved her Mexican novelas as well as the daytime soaps. She was known for her homemade flour tortillas, spicy green chile, baking sweets, and making tamales around Christmas. She was especially fond of Aileen’s homemade enchiladas, and she would never turn down a trip to Baskin Robbins for her favorite strawberry ice cream, even if she was full.  She had an affinity towards roosters from her humble beginnings growing up on farms.  She lived life to the fullest and participated in many activities. She enjoyed playing Bingo and going to Reno to play slot machines, where she often came back as a winner. She was even part of a senior dance group and performed Michael Jackson routines for Senior Centers and Hospitals.  In addition, she was always available to pierce ears for any friend or family member who would come to the house.

In her 50's, Lucy was diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently faced many difficult health challenges through the years. Yet, she never gave up and never complained. She was STRONG, HUMBLE, and RESILIENT.  She was the pillar of our family who gave strength and support to each one of us as well as to many friends and anyone lucky enough to have known her.

Lucy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Roy Talavera and her seven siblings.  Devoted mother of Roy Talavera, Aileen Arellano, Rosalie Talavera, Gregory Talavera, and Marie Jordan.  Dear mother-in-law of Melanie and Bobby, loving grandmother of Matthew, Nichole, Vanessa, Alex, Kameron and Adrian, great grandmother of Derrick, Sylvan, Maya and great-great grandmother of Devin and Dylan.
