John F. McDermott of San Jose, CA was called home on 12/30/19 after a brief and sudden illness. John was born in Fredericksburg, VA while his parents were stationed at MCB Quantico, and was raised in Randolph, MA.
Always a standout athlete, John was a 2 sport captain and 1976 graduate of Randolph High School. He went on to play baseball at Nichols College before graduating with an Accounting degree. In 1986, John moved, permanently, to northern California. However, even after 33 years it was still easy to see that Boston was in his blood.
John was large in stature, but his personality was even larger. He always had a funny story to share, and often a strong opinion, especially if the topic was sports or politics. His smiling eyes and witty one liners brought joy and laughter to everyone he encountered. He enjoyed reading & cooking and was especially passionate about his favorite teams back in New England. John’s ability to connect with people was matched only by his kindness and giving spirit to anyone he met. His favorite pastime was sharing a laugh with a friend, new or old. To his friends he was known as Johnny, Mac, or JMAC, and while he will be missed by all that knew him, his one-liners are sure to be repeated for generations to come!
Survived by his loving wife, Rachel Marie (Scaglione); predeceased by his son John Edward II. He is the oldest son of Lorraine and the late John E. McDermott. He is survived by his brother Michael and his wife Lisa (Hanson MA), sister Donna and her husband Bruce Post (Orange CT), brother Dan and his wife Julie (Franklin MA) and brother Bob and his wife Erica (Scituate MA). And, “Uncle John” was so loved and appreciated by his many nieces and nephews.
