Mrs. Gwyneth Gail (Selkirk) Johnson, age 73, passed away peacefully at 4:30 PM on March 21st in Good Samaritan Hospital San Jose, CA surrounded by her loving family. She was a long time resident of Campbell, California. She had waged a long fight against Congestive Heart Failure and was a breast cancer survivor.
Gwen was born in June 1944 in Malone NY to Elsie (Clark) and Douglas Selkirk. She was raised in Burke, NY on the family dairy farm and graduated from Chateaugay High School, Chateaugay, NY. She was a trained beautician who worked for a number of years in upstate NY .
One of her favorite memories was dancing in a musical review in Malone NY patterned after the Radio City Music Hall in New York city. She got to wear one of the actual Rockettes costumes.
Gwen met her future husband, Navy Warrant Officer Robert Johnson, while traveling in Europe in 1969. They were married in Burke, NY in December of '69. They spent three years in Japan with the Navy and then settled in Campbell where they raised their family. After retirement she loved to travel in their RV throughout the Western US.
Gwen loved to travel in their RV. She loved the Arizona Desert, the Black Hills of South Dakota, California's Redwood Highway and Gold country. A couple of her favorites were Mt. Rushmore and Dead Wood SD. She loved picking wild blackberries on the Klamath River and free oranges at the Orange Grove RV park in Bakersfield.
Gwen was a big country music fan. We saw Shania twice in Las Vegas. If she could see one of her country favorites live on stage she was in heaven. She loved the bright lights of Las Vegas even though she was not a gambler. Just wandering through the casinos and putting fifty cents in a penny slot made her happy.
Her greatest joy was her family, daughter, son and new grandson as well as her close friends who supported her in her final days.
Gwen is survived by husband Robert of Campbell, Daughter Natalie (Bill) Richards of Pembroke Pines FL, son Christoper Johnson of Campbell, grandson Cameron Richards of Pembroke Pines, FL., sisters Carol (Cecil) Lewis of Gilbert, AZ, Joan (Bob) Greene of Malone NY, and Sharon (Donnie) Recore of Belleview, FL as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services wil be held at the Darling-Fischer Family Mortuary, Campbell, CA. Viewing will be at 12:00 and services at 2:00 on March 28th . A private burial service will be held the following day at the San Joaquin National Cemetery.
