Affectionately known as “Hunk” by family and friends, Emery Leon Garland went to join his son, brother and parents in heaven on April 8, 2022. He passed away peacefully at home with family by his side.
Emery was born in Oklahoma on October 20, 1932 and moved with his parents, Pearl and Mose Garland and his brother Glen to Wasco, CA when he was a teenager where he connected with the love of his life, Laquetta. They have been married for 65 years and had two children, the late Terrence “Bruce” Garland and Larry “Vance” Garland. He adored his boys and was beyond proud of both of them. His boys loved him tremendously and he was to both of them, their best friend and they shared an incredibly strong bond with him.
He is survived by his bride Laquetta, his son Vance and daughter in law Grace, his granddaughters Nicole Garland~42, Kelly Garland ~35, Jamie Garland ~32, grandson Anthony Garland ~ 17 and the next generation of boys to adore Papa Hunk are great grandsons Jacob Cesario~ 21, Jayden Caldwell ~9, Smith Tennant ~ 22 months and Sway Tennant ~ 8.5 months and sister in law Sharon Garland in Bakersfield. He was an amazing dad, always happy and interested in all of his family and friends. He was truly selfless, taking care of Laquetta for 15 years after she suffered a stroke and his only concern was taking care of her. His friendships in the neighborhood are phenomenal, he would sit in his garage listening to music and if you happened to walk by, you probably ended up in conversation with him!
A veteran, Emery served in the Air Force, stationed in Hawaii and was forever enamored with Hawaii. He came home and married Laquetta and they moved to San Jose when Emery started working at Lockheed. His career spanned 38 years and he worked on many special projects and received several awards. His time at Lockheed fostered a passion for history and he was an avid historian. Another keen interest was cars, sports cars, antique cars, really any kind of car! He loved music and especially the blues, anything BB King and Merle Haggard or Buck Owens.
Our Hunk of burning love will be forever missed, cherished and loved. Rest in peace, Papa.
There will be a Celebration of Life at his home in Campbell on Saturday April 16th from 12pm-3pm.
