James Marcellus MartinDecember 13, 1932 ~ October 1, 2017 (age 84)
James Marcellus Martin was born December 13, 1932 in Lane County Oregon. He grew up in the farming community of Gillespie Corners near Eugene, Oregon. As a teenager he became acquainted with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS – Mormon) and became converted after reading the Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith. His faith never wavered and he remained an active church member for the rest of his life. He met his wife, Sumiko Shirota, while working on the Brigham Young University campus and they married in the Cardston, Alberta LDS Temple. They remained life-long companions and sweethearts throughout their 62-year marriage. Together, they embarked on a life of service in church and community, as workers in the Oakland California LDS Temple for over 33 years and as volunteers at Kaiser Hospital for over 18 years. James passed from mortality to immortality on October 1, 2017 after developing sudden heart complications. He is survived by his wife Sumiko, daughters Marcy and Margot, grandchildren Martina, Clay, Heather, Ashley, Travis, and Nathaniel, great-grandchildren Tanner, Alyssa, Maddisyn, Maisie, Claire, and Ezra, and sister Kay. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend – until we meet again.
